PRAYER TO ST. JOSEPH FOR PROTECTION. (THIS PRAYER WAS TAKEN FROM THE BOOKLET "DEVOTIONS OF SAINT JOSEPH" BY BRIAN MOORE, S.J., PRINTED AND PUBLISHED BY THE SOCIETY OF ST. PAUL.)

Great Saint Joseph,

you guided our Lord, Jesus Christ, in his boyhood and young manhood,

and he called you his father.

Be a father to me, since Jesus has made me his brother. You worked for him; you taught him to work.

Teach me too.

You kept him safe in the flight into Egypt;

keep me safe in my journey through life.

Let me never turn aside from the right road

of the love of our Lord,

and of faith and hope in Him.

May I, as you did,

have Jesus and Mary at my deathbed;

and, as you are,

may I be united with them forever in Heaven.

TUESDAY APRIL 20, 2010

Because Saint Joseph was the representative of our Heavenly Father on earth, because he acted as Christ's father in his life on earth, he is divinely appointed head of the Holy Family. The Holy Family of Saint Joseph, The Blessed Mother, and the Son of God is the beginning and the model for the great family of God, His Church here on earth. In this way, Saint Joseph is father to all of us.

FRIDAY APRIL 16, 2010

The following is an excerpt from a reflection of Pope Benedict XVI on St. Joseph:

Speaking to the crowd and to his disciples, Jesus declared, "you have only one Father" (Mt 23:9). There is but one fatherhood, that of God the Father, the one creator of the world, "of all that is seen and unseen." Yet man, created in the image of God, has been granted a share in this one paternity of God (cf. Eph 3:15). Saint Joseph is a striking case of this, since he is a father, without fatherhood according to the flesh. He is not the biological father of Jesus, whose father is God alone, and yet he lives his fatherhood fully and completely. To be a father means above all to be the service of life and growth. Saint Joseph, in this sense, gave proof of great devotion. For the sake of Christ he experienced persecution, exile and the poverty which this entails. He had to settle far from his native town. His only reward was to be with Christ. His readiness to do all these things illustrates the words of Saint Paul: "It is Christ the Lord whom you serve" (Col 3:24).

TUESDAY APRIL 13, 2010

St. Josemaria Escriva visited Mexico in 1970. While there, he had contemplated an image of Our Lady of Guadalupe handing a rose to Juan Diego. He said that he would like to die like that: looking at the Blessed Mother while she offered him a flower.

In 1975 he celebrated 50 years of priesthood. After an event commemorating this milestone, he returned tired to his office where an image of Our Lady of Guadalupe hung. Entering the office, he glanced at the image and said to another priest who had accompanied him, "I don't feel well." He collapsed on the floor dead with the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe that presided over his office, receiving his last glance on earth.

Congratulations to the varsity baseball team for beating St. Stephen's last night  10-5. Luciano Villanueva got the pitching victory and also slammed a towering 3-run homerun. Phil DeTremp pitched the final four innings to seal the victory. The varsity plays at Central Catholic tomorrow night.

The JV red team also beat St. Stephen's 10-0. Paul Miller pitched a 1-hit game to earn the victory.

MONDAY APRIL 12, 2010

When Saint Josemaría first arrived in Rome on the evening of June 23, 1946, he took up lodgings in a little apartment at the very top of a building in the Piazza Città Leonina, just a short distance away from Saint Peter’s Basilica. When night fell, he went out onto the covered balcony overlooking the Apostolic Palace where Pope Pius XII lived. From there he could see the windows of the Pope’s apartment. Deeply moved, he began praying for the Holy Father.
On October 6, 2002, from very early in the morning, prayers for the Pope and the Church rose up from the huge crowd that filled not only Saint Peter’s Square, but also the Via della Conciliazione, and many of the surrounding streets and squares as well. The authorities calculated that a total of 450,000 to 500,000 people had come to celebrate Saint Josemaría’s canonization. For many of them it was their first visit to Rome; and for some, it was probably the only time they would be there in their whole lifetime.

FRIDAY APRIL 9, 2010

After 3 years of serving as a priest, St. Josemaria "saw" the will of God one day while on retreat. He rarely spoke about this event, however when he did, he used the verb see to refer to that supernatural intervention: it was an intellectual vision of Opus Dei such as God wished it to be and as it would be down through the centuries.

What was it that he saw? He saw people of every nation and race, of every age and culture, seeking and finding God right in the middle of their ordinary life, their work, their family, and their friendships. People who looked for Jesus in order to love him and to live his holy life until they were completely transformed and made into saints. Saints in the world. A tailor saint, a baker saint, an office saint, a factory worker saint. A saint, seemingly like everyone else around him, but deeply identified with Jesus Christ. A person who directs all his activity to God, who sanctifies in his work and sanctifies others through it. A person who Christianizes his surroundings, who with warm simple friendships also helps his neighbor to come closer to Jesus-someone who Christian faith is contagious.

THURSDAY APRIL 8, 2010

Shortly before he finished his seminary studies, St. Josemaria Escriva's father died unexpectedly. The first Mass he said as a priest was for the repose of the soul of his father. From that moment on, Holy Mass became central in his life. He would tell others. "keep struggling, so that the Holy Sacrifice of the Altar really becomes the center and the root of your interior life, and so your whole day will turn into an act of worship-an extension of the Mass you have attended and a preparation for the next. Your whole day will then be an act of worship that overflows in aspirations, visits to the Blessed Sacrament and the offering up of your professional work and your family life."

TUESDAY APRIL 6, 2010

Beginning in 1918, Josemaria sensed that God was asking something of him, although he didn't know exactly what it was. He decided to become a priest, in order to be available for whatever God wanted of him. He began studying for the priesthood, first in Logrono and later in Saragossa. At his father's suggestion and with the permission of his superiors at the seminary he also began to study civil law. He was ordained a priest and began his pastoral ministry in 1925.
In 1927, Fr. Josemaria moved to Madrid to study for a graduate degree in law. He was accompanied by his mother, sister, and brother, as his father had died in 1924 and he was now head of the family. They were not well-off, and he had to tutor law students to support them. At the same time he carried out a demanding pastoral work, especially among the poor and sick in Madrid, and with young children. He also undertook an apostolate with manual workers, professional people and university students who, by coming into contact with the poor and sick to whom Fr. Josemaria was ministering, learned the practical meaning of charity and their Christian responsibility to help out in the betterment of society.

MONDAY APRIL 5, 2010

Last week we learned of St. Josemaria Escriva's miraculous cure from illness when he was a young child. By the age of 16 Josemaria was working. One winter morning as he walked to work, he looked down at the snow and saw footprints left by bare feet. He realized that they had been made by one of the Carmelite friars who had recently arrived in the city. He wondered: If others can make such sacrifices for God, can't I offer him something? It was a thought destined to remain with him for the rest of his life.

"Our Lord was preparing me in spite of myself, using apparently innocuous things to instill a divine restlessness in my soul. Thus I came to understand very well the love, so human and so divine, that moved Saint Therese of the child Jesus when, leafing through pages of a book, she suddenly came upon a picture of one of the Redeemer's wounded hands. Things like that happened to me too; things that moved me and led me to daily Communion, to purification, to confession, and to penance. I began to have intimations of love, to realize that my heart was asking for something great, and that it was love. I didn't know what God wanted of me, but it was evident that I had been chosen for something."

At the age of 17, St. Josemaria Escriva began his seminary studies.

WEDNESDAY MARCH 31, 2010

When St. Josemaria was only two years old, he became seriously ill; so ill that the doctor expected him to die. Around him, the Escrivahousehold fell silent. Finally, Dr. Campos, who had done everything possible to save him, told his father, "He won't last through the night." But Jose Escriva and his wife Maria Dolores Albas Escriva were devout Catholics who prayed to God with great faith for their child's cure. Dolores promised the blessed Mother that is he got well, she would bring him on pilgrimage to the ancient chapel of Torreciudad perched on a sloping cliff in the foothills of the Pyrences. The next morning, the doctor returned to call on the family. "At what time did the little boy die" he asked. The boy's father, unable to contain his joy, replied, "Not only did he not die, but he seems completely recovered!"

The Apache softball team played a double header yesterday against St. Augustine Laredo. The Apaches won both games 16-0 and 15-0. Two homeruns were scored in the first game by Lauren Salinas and Danielle Aguilar. In the second game, the team had a total of 26 steals. This brings the varsity team to a 6-0 record in district.

The girls tennis team finished second in the district/regional meet on Tuesday. The girls qualified five players for state. Jackie Palmer, Audrey Camero, Mary Luckett, Melanie Herschell, and Becky Sauceda. The boys tennis team finished in 4th place and qualified Luke Keller and Jared Thomas. The level of play at this meet was very high and it was not easy to make it through to the next round. Good luck Apaches!

If you're interested in taking an AP exam, you must sign up with Mr. Eureste by next WEDNESDAY, APRIL 7. The cost is $80.00 for each exam.

Congratulations to the boys and girls golf teams with strong showings over the past few days. The girls team of Lundan Baldeschwiler, Lauren Latham, Lorah Smith, Stephanie Uy, Lori Martinez, and Michelle Aguirre finished as the 5th best girls team in the region. In addition, Ms. Martinez was the 2nd place individual and Ms. Uy was the 4th place individual. These young ladies will represent ACP at the state golf meet in a few weeks. The boys team of Eddie Devane, Larry Hicks, John Cooper, Alex Bissaro, and Andre Ramirez, shot a school record round on the final day to secure a spot at the state golf tournament. Mr. Devane also won a playoff for the 2nd place individual and freshman Ben Kalter finished in the top 15 to make it to state as an individual. Phil Coelho, Jason McKeown, and Andrew Sanders also played very well. Congratulations to all of the golfers.

TUESDAY MARCH 30, 2010

Opus Dei is Latin for "the work of God." Father Josemaria Escriva came upon Opus Dei while on a religious retreat in 1928. Its aim is to help all kinds of Christian faithful to live fully in accordance with their faith in life's ordinary circumstances, and especially to sanctify their daily work.

St. Josemaria described it like this:

"God raised up Opus Dei to help remind Christians that, as we read in the book of Genesis, God created man in order to work. We have come to point to the example of Jesus, who spent thirty years in Nazareth, working at his job. In Jesus' hands, work, an ordinary job like that done by millions of people throughout the world, becomes a divine task, a redeeming job, a path of salvation."

The spirit of Opus Dei reflects the reality that any honest and worthwhile work can be turned into a divine occupation. Sanctifying one's work means working in the spirit of Jesus Christ - doing one's work well and finishing it off, to give glory to God and serve others, and so help sanctify the world, by brining the spirit of the Gospel into all human activities.

FRIDAY MARCH 26, 2010

Oh Saint Maria Goretti who strengthened by God's grace, did not hesitate even at the age of 12 to shed your blood and sacrafice life itself to defend your virginal purity, look graciously on the unhappy human which has strayed far from the path of eternal salvation. Teach us all, and especially youth, with what courage and promptitude we should flee for the love of Jesus anything that could offend him or stain our souls with sin. Obtain for us from our Lord victory in temptation, comfort in the sorrows of life, and the grace which we earnestly beg of thee, and may we one day enjoy with the the imperishable glory of Heaven. Amen.

THURSDAY MARCH 25, 2010

Maria's murderer was sentenced to 30 years in prison. He was unrepentant at first, however after several years of confinement, he had a vision of Maria. After serving his sentence, Alessandro spent the rest of his life working as a gardener at a Capuchin monastery. That led to his conversion. Upon serving his sentence, he sought the forgiveness of Maria's mother and family. At 66 years of age, he was one of the 250,000 people who attended Maria Goretti's canonization ceremony. Shortly before his death, he wrote the following  statement:

"I'm nearly 80 years. I'm about to depart. Looking back at my past, I can see that in my early youth, I chose a bad path which led me to ruin myself. My behavior was influenced by print, mass media, and bad examples which are followed by the majority of young people without even thinking. And I did the same. I was not worried. There were a lot of generous and devoted people who surrounded me, but I paid no attention to them because a violent force blinded me and pushed me toward a wrong way of life. When I was 20 years old, I committed a crime of passion. Now, that memory represents something horrible for me. Maria Goretti, now a Saint, was my good Angel, sent me through Providence to guide and save me. I still have impressed upon my heart her words to rebuke and of pardon. She prayed, she interceded for her murder. Thirty years of prison followed. If I had been of age, I would have spent all my life in prison. I accepted to be condemned because it was my own fault. Little Maria was really my light, my protectress; with her help, I behaved well during the 27 years of prison and tried to live honestly when I was again accepted among the members of society. The Brothers of St. Francis, Capuchins from Marche, welcomed me with angelic charity into their monastery as a brother, not as a servant. I've been living with their community for 24 years, and now I am serenely waiting to witness the vision of God, to hug my loved ones again, and to be next to my Guardian angel and her dear mother Assunta. I hope this letter that I wrote can teach others the happy lesson of avoiding evil and of always following the right path, like little children. I feel that religion with its precepts is not something we can live without, but rather it is the real comfort, the real strength in life and the only safe way in every circumstance, even the most painful ones in life."

FRIDAY MARCH 12, 2010

Whether it was through ignorance or deception or a combination of the two, Joan of Arc's trial was not appealed to the Pope. The case remained a local affair under the supervision of the Bishop of Beauvais (Boo-vwah). Twenty-four (24) years after her execution, Joan's family appealed to the Holy Sec to reopen her case. The Pope granted their request. The new inquiry reserved and declared illegal the trial under the Bishop of Beauvais. Joan was declared innocent of the charges of heresy. Four hundred thirty-eight (438) years after her execution, she was beatified. Forty (40) years after her beatification, Joan of Arc was declared a saint in 1909.

THURSDAY MARCH 11, 2010

Joan of Arc lived before the Protestant Reformation: the Church was divided into the Eastern Orthodox and the Roman Catholic Church. France, England, and the rest of Western Europe were Catholic. Joan's English captors were very much worried about her role in motivating the French resistance and wished to have her tried as a sorceress or heretic. She was tried under the supervision of the Catholic Bishop of Beauvais (Boo-v-wah) who chose the judges himself. On May 9, 1431, forty-two (42) of the forty-seven (47) judges declared that she be handed over to civil authorities as a heretic to be burned at the stake of she did not recant. Joan did make a partial retraction, but the extent of it is unclear. Nevertheless, by the end of May, she violated the terms of retraction and was burned at the stake as a relapsed heretic on May 30. Before her execution, she embraced a cross that was held up by a Dominican priest as she burned and called out the name of Jesus. At her death, an English royal secretary proclaimed, "We are lost; we have lost a saint."

WEDNESDAY MARCH 10, 2010

Although Charles had been crowned King, Paris and points north of it were still under English control. After the battle of Orleans, Joan led a successful attack to break the siege of the town of Compiègne (Sham-pan-ya). From there she moved on to Paris. This attack failed. As she returned to Compiègne, the drawbridge was raised before she and some of her troops returned. She was captured and taken to the Duke of Burgundy, an ally of the English. The French King made little effort to intervene either militarily or diplomatically on Joan's behalf. One source describes it thus: "No words can adequately describe the disgraceful ingratitude and apathy of Charles and his advisers in leaving the maid to her fate." The Duke of Burgundy sold Joan to the English for a sum of several hundred dollars in today's dollars.

The Apache softball team had an exciting victory over Incarnate Word High School last night for the first district game of the season. The Apaches shut out the Shamrocks with a 7-0 win, and played a nearly perfect game. Highlights include solid triple hits by Caitlin McBrearty and Danielle Aguilar, as well as a nice double hit by Lee Ann Campos. Jayelle Velasques had an amazing "split" that helped to secure the win for the Apaches. Maricela Bissaro pitched a strong one hitter with 5 strikeouts. This was a great way to start off district games and the girls are ready to rally through the rest of the season.

TUESDAY MARCH 9, 2010

The city of Orleans had been under an English siege for nearly a year when Joan arrived. Her presence there did much to raise the morale of the French troops, who believed that she was a manifestation of divine help. Orleans' war released from its siege and her troops followed up with another victory at the Battle of Paty (Pa-tay). Shortly after these victories, Charles was crowned King Charles VII of France as Joan stood by his side.

MONDAY MARCH 8, 2010

When Joan of Arc surprised the deposed heir to the French throne, Charles, with the knowledge her voices had given her, he sent her off to be examined. The committee of bishops and doctors that examined Joan found nothing heretical about her claims. She was fit to be employed, however, Charles saw fit they maintained. Joan was outfitted with a suit of armor. When Charles presented her with a sword, she asked that they search for an ancient sword buried behind the altar in the chapel of St. Catherine de Fierbois. They found the sword there.

THURSDAY MARCH 4, 2010

The commander to whom Joan of Arc presented herself, was skeptical to say the least, when the 18 year old farm girl explained that her mission was to save France. Nevertheless, she persisted for 5 months. Meanwhile, the fall of Orleans seemed imminent. WEDNESDAY MARCH 3, 2010

You heard yesterday that during Joan of Arc's time, England controlled Northern France. England also had claim to the entire French Kingdom by virtue of marrying the French King's daughter, and a treaty that declared he would succeed to the French throne. When the French king died, parts of unoccupied France rejected the English king's claim to the French throne. They rallied around the son of the dead French king. The English proceeded to march southward to gain control of the entire kingdom. The first major city they came across was Orleans. They laid siege to Orleans and lasted more than one year.

TUESDAY MARCH 2, 2010

Joan of Arc's mission, given to her by "her voices," was to "save France." She was born during the 100 Years War, a series of wars in which England sought to exert its claim over the Kingdom of France. By the year 1415, England controlled much of Northern France, including Paris. It's king, Henry V, married the daughter of the French king, Charles VI. Treaty stipulated that when the French king died, Henry would become the King of France as well as England.

MONDAY MARCH 1, 2010

Joan of Arc began to receive her "counsel" in 1425. Her mission gradually became clear over the next three years. In 1428 at the insistence of her voices, she presented herself to King Charles VII's commander in a neighboring town. She told the commander her mission was to "save France."

The varsity boys basketball season came to an end on Friday as they lost in the semi-finals to the number one ranked Prestonwood Christian Lions 70-50. The Apaches ended up with a 27-11 season record and were still playing in the final week of the basketball season. Congratulations to the boys and coaching staff on a successful season. See you next year.

Our varsity girl's basketball team played the 8-time defending state champion Bishop Lynch on Saturday in Mansfield. Our girls played well and went into halftime up 31-28, but too many turnovers and missed free throws, cost our girls the game as we fell short and lost 54-60. Maureen Zuniga and Kathryn Galindo each had 15 points and Liz Briones had 14 points. It was a total team effort from the girls that started, those that played sparingly, and to the contribution from our team managers. Everyone played a significant role. The varsity finished the season with a remarkable 30 wins and only 8 losses.

Coach Ross would like to thank all the girls for their dedication, hard work, and sacrifice to make the season one of the best ever in Antonian's history. A special appreciation goes out to Kathryn "Big O" Galindo, Liz Briones, and Nicole Conlee for being great seniors and leaders.

The girl's basketball program would like to thank all the parents and students who took time out of their schedule to support them during the year and to our administration, faculty, and staff who provided patience and support with our coaches and student-athletes during the long season.

The Apache softball team took 4th place out of 16 teams at the North East tournament this weekend. Highlights include a shut-out against MacArthur and a win against Clemens. The girls have their first home game tonight against Brackenridge at 4:00 and 7:00 p.m. Come out and show your support.

The boys varsity baseball team finished the Northside tournament with 2 wins and 3 losses. Their wins were against #8 ranked Clark 5-1 and Central Catholic 12-6. This weekend they will participate in the Comal ISD tournament.

The JV White team beat Lutheran last Thursday, but lost to Alamo Heights on Saturday. They play St. Mary's Hall at home on Thursday.

The JV Red team lost to Alamo Heights on Saturday also . They will be participating in the East Central JV tournament this weekend.

THURSDAY FEBRUARY 25, 2010

At the age of 13, Joan of Arc became aware of what she called her "voices" or "counsel." At first it was manifested only as a voice. Later the voices were accompanied by a blaze of light. Eventually she was able to identify her counsel givers as St. Michael, St. Margaret, and St. Catherine.

WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 24, 2010

Joan of Arc, national hero of France and saint, is the Junior's selection of a saint for our chapel. MONDAY FEBRUARY 22, 2010

On Friday you heard of Pope John Paul II's personal connection to St. Padre Pio. We end our reflection on Padre Pio with this prayer recited at his canonization:

Teach us, we pray, humility of the heart, so that we may be counted among the little ones of the Gospel to whom the Father promised to reveal the mysteries of his kingdom. Help us to pray without ceasing, certain that God knows what we need even before we ask him. Obtain for us the eyes of faith that will help us recognize in the poor and suffering, the very face of Jesus. Sustain us in the hour of trouble and trial, and, if we fail, let us experience the joy of the sacrament of forgiveness. Grant us your tender devotion to Mary, mother of Jesus and our mother. Accompany us on our earthly pilgrimage toward the blessed homeland, where we too, hope to arrive to contemplate forever the glory of the father, the son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

-This prayer was recited by Pope John Paul II on June 16, 2002 at Padre Pio's canonization

Mr. Bray and Mr. Sipe would like to congratulate the Antonian Latin Club for a superlative performance at the Texas State Junior Classical League Area B Academic Olympics this past weekend. Out of 23 schools total in attendance and 7 schools competing in the uppermost division, Antonian took FIRST PLACE FOR THE 3RD YEAR IN A ROW, marking the first time that any school has ever done so. Mr. Bray and Mr. Sipe wish to thank all club members for putting forth the effort necessary for such a victory. As a club, all members have contributed whether present this weekend or not, be it through tough study or support. We are immensely proud of every one of you. The following are the results of the competition for Antonian. On behalf  of the Latin Club, we especially wish to thank the teachers and staff for heir support and patience with the carious scheduling inconveniences that the club's activities have caused. A PARTICULAR THANK YOU GOES TO MR. HAYWARD AND MR. SAENZ who have been instrumental in laying the groundwork for the kids to succeed. Without the support of the entire Antonian family, none of the club's successes would be possible.

The Apache boys basketball team met up with a tough St. Thomas team and came up on top with a 51-49 victory at the TAPPS 5A Regional game this past Saturday. FRIDAY FEBRUARY 19, 2010

Padre Pio was beatified by John Paul II in 1999 and canonized in 2002. Pope John Paul II had a deep and personal respect for Padre Pio, whose intersession he sought while he was Bishop Karol Wojtyla. In 1962, the future Pope learned that his friend, a psychiatrist who had helped him in the preparation of his first book, Love and Responsibility, was stricken with terminal cancer. He wrote to Padre Pio asking him for prayers for her. When she was x-rayed in preparation for surgery to remove the cancerous mass, it was revealed that the mass had completely disappeared. Bishop Wojtyla believed it was a miracle worked by Padre Pio's intersession.

Padre Pio focused on prayer as he touched many lives. One famous quote recited by Padre Pio was "Pray, pray to the Lord with me, because the whole world needs prayer. And every day, when your heart feels the loneliness of life, pray. Pray to the Lord, because even God needs our prayers."

TUESDAY FEBRUARY 16, 2010

Like St. Thomas Aquinas, Padre Pio experienced many ecstasies in his life. In July of 1918, he offered himself as a victim for the end of World War I. Days later, he had a vision in which Christ appeared and pierced his side. This resulted in a physical wound on his side. Several weeks later, he experienced an ecstasy in which the wounded Christ visited him. When the ecstasy ended he had the visible stigmata of the 5 wounds of Christ. The stigmata would remain with him 50 years until shortly before his death.

FRIDAY FEBRUARY 12, 2010

St. Padre Pio had always been a devout child and from about the age of 10, he indicated that he wanted a religious life. At that time after seeing a Capuchin friar traveling in his village, he said he wanted to "be a friar with a beard." His parents consulted with the friars in a nearby village to see if they were interested in having their son join them. They were, but Padre Pio would need more than the three years of schooling he had. Because his parents were farm laborers and had little hope of improving their lot in their village, Padre Pio's father traveled to America to find work in order to pay for the private tutoring his son would need.

THURSDAY FEBRUARY 11, 2010

In September of 1918, as he was kneeling in front of a crucifix, Padre Pio received the visible marks of the crucifixion. The doctor that examined him found no natural cause from the wounds. The wounds were no longer visible upon his death in 1968. 50 years prior to his death, Padre Pio predicted his wounds would be healed. In fact, wounds and scaring vanished, and his skin was completely renewed.

He became a Capuchin nocice at the age of 16, and was ordained to the priesthood at the age of 23. He is most known as the only priest to have received the stigmata, or wounds of Christ. Padre Pio died in 1968 and was canonized in 2002. Over 500,000 people gathered to watch Pope John Paul II proclaim him a saint.

MONDAY FEBRUARY 8, 2010

We have been reflecting on the saint chosen by the senior class-St. Agnes. Her feast day is January 21. On this day, two lambs are brought to the church dedicated to her on the Via Nomentana. They are blessed, taken out, and cared for until the time comes for them to be sheared. The wool is woven by the nuns of St. Agnes convent into the pallia given by the Pope to new archbishops.

The Antonian tennis team had a good team match in Hondo on Saturday. They finished with an 18-14 winning record. Undefeated players were Jaclyn Palmer, Luke Keller, Melanie Herschell, and Jacob Miller. Congratulations to the tennis team!

The JV and varsity girls basketball teams played their last district home game this past Saturday. The JV team won their game 59-44. Victoria Briones came off the bench and scored 13 points. Sabrina Perez added 12 points and Monica Conlee had 10 points.

The basketball program would like to thank all those who came out and supported our girls. The next game will be on Tuesday against Providence at 5:30 p.m. for JV, and 7:00 p.m. for varsity. If our varsity wins their last game, they will be District Champions!

Beheaded for her beliefs, she is a martyr of the Church.

We compete these days of reflection on St. Thomas Aquinas with a prayer to him:

St. Thomas Aquinas patron of students and Catholic Schools, we thank God for the gifts of light and knowledge he bestowed upon you, which you used to build up the Church in love. We thank God too for the wealth and richness of theological teaching you left us in your writings. Not only were you great teacher, you lived a life of virtue and you made holiness the desire of your heart. If we cannot imitate you in the brilliance of your academic purists, I can follow you in the humility and charity that marked your life. As St. Paul said, charity is the greatest gift, and it is open to all. Pray for us that we may grow in holiness and charity. Pray also for Catholic Schools and all students. Amen

MONDAY FEBRUARY 1, 2010

St. Thomas Aquinas died in 1274 at the age of 49, and he was cannonized 49 years later in 1323. His writings, however, took much longer to take hold and became the reverted works that they are today. In fact, three years after his death, one bishop condemned 21 of Thomas' thesis' and this was followed by the Dominican-the same order as Thomas-Archbishop of Canterbury doing the same. His rise to preeminence in Catholic Theology began during the Council of Trent during the 16th century. In 1567, nearly 300 years after his death, Pope St. Pius V declared Thomas a Doctor of the Church and gave him the title of "Angelic Doctor".

The Varsity Apaches lost the rubber match to rival Central Catholic before another enthusiastic crowd on Saturday night by a score of 69-63. Both teams got off to a good start but it was the Buttons who hit their shots and prevailed with the win. Still, the Apaches who got off to great start in district by rattling off 4 straight wins sits tied with Holy Cross for 1st place. The JV also played a tough game against the Buttons but, dropped a loss 58-64. The Boy's still have two more crucial contests against St. Anthony on Saturday February 6th and against St. Michael on Tuesday February 9th (Senior Night).

Come out and continue to support the Boy's as they fight for the district title.

Come out. Wear red. Be loud!

The girls basketball teams played Incarnate Word on Saturday. This was the last game of the season for our freshman basketball team, and they finished out strong winning their game 43-34. Victoria Briones led the way with 16 points and Monica Conlee chipped in 16 points to help the freshman team hold off a late rally to win.

The JV team played a tight, low scoring game and won 36-24. Teresa Browning scored a game high 15 points to help the JV win.

The varsity team played together and showed a lot of heart as they won 64-60. Maureen "Moses" Zuniga stepped up in the 4th quarter to score 11 of her 22 points to lead the way. Kathryn "Big O" Galindo played strong in the 2nd half and had 18 points and 9 rebounds. Liz "Mija" Briones showed leadership and determination as she played tough defense and scored 9 points and 6 rebounds while playing with flu-like symptoms. All the girls played with pride and earned the win.

The basketball program would like to thank everyone who was in attendance to support. It was a packed house, and the girls are proud that they defended our home court with pride and respect.

Also, all freshman basketball players need to turn in their uniforms to Coach Ross by this Wednesday.

All sophomores and juniors who took the practice SAT (PSAT) on January 9, please pick up your scores in the Counseling Office.

THURSDAY JANUARY 28, 2010

Yesterday at Mass, we heard of the ecstacy St. Thomas Aquinas experienced that led him to stop writing. The Church describes an ecstacy as a "mystical enrapture of the body and soul." St. Thomas experienced many such ecstacies in his life. During another in Naples in 1273 after Thomas had completed his treatise on the Eucharist, three of his Dominican bretheren witnessed him lifted in ecstacy, and heard a voice coming from the crucifix on the altar asking him, "You have written well of me Thomas; what reward will you have?" They heard Thomas reply, "None other than you Lord."

WEDNESDAY JANUARY 27, 2010

"St. Thomas Aquinas is among the most important saints for teachers of both sacred and secular subjects. Aquinas himself distinguished very little between sacred and secular subjects: he maintained that one learned about faith by reason and that reason supported faith" (Swetnam pg. 55). Pope Benedict has said of St. Thomas Aquinas that he has the charisma of both a philosopher and a theologian, and he "offers a valid model of harmony between reason and faith." http://www.ignatiusinsight.com/features2007/schall_b16aquinas_feb07.asp

MONDAY JANUARY 25, 2010

As we begin with our 100 days of prayer, we will highlight in our daily reflections the lives of the saints whom we have chosen to be the first images installed in our Chapel of the Saints. We begin with St. Thomas Aquinas. He is the patron saint of teachers and a doctor of the Church. He was born into a noble Italian family around 1225. At the age of 19 he decided that he wanted to live a religious life. When we became a novice of the Dominicans, a mendicant order that takes a vow of property, his family protested and kidnapped and imprisoned him in the castle of Monte San Givanni.

The girls JV and varsity teams played against St. Michael's Saturday. The JV team picked up the effort and dominated the second half to win 62-28. Teresa Browning scored 25 points. Sabrina "Rockstar" Perez had 16 points and Julie Earl had 11 points. The varsity team started off well and ended up winning 82-54. Liz "Joey in DC" Briones led the way with 24 points, 10 rebounds, 5 steals, and 4 assists. Maureen "Moses" Zuniga had 19 points, 4 assists, and 3 steals. Kathryn "Big O" Galindo had 16 points and 15 rebounds, and Nicole Conlee had 10 points.

Congratulations ladies. Keep up the good work and continue to play hard, smart, and together. GO APACHES!

The Varsity Apaches got their 4th district win on Saturday night with a 68-73 win over a strong St. Michaels squad. The Apaches were led by Jonathan Holmes who had an absolutely phenomenal performance scoring 47 points. The JV squad fought a tough battle but came up short 63-76. The freshman took their game into OT but fell short in the end 77-75. Next up for the Apaches is an away game versus Holy Cross On Wednesday Jan.27th.

Come out and support all of the Apache teams as they move into the 2nd half of district play. Game times begin with frshman at 5:00, JV at 6:30, and varsity at 8:00.

The HGA Invitational Gymnastics Meet was held this past weekend. Our very own Corey Murray took 2 silver medals in high bars and parallel bars. He finished 5th overall. Congratulations Corey!

All Sophomores and Juniors: The PRA/SAT Presentation will be this Wednesday January 27, at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium.
