College Financial Aid and
Scholarship Process

As you begin your college search, be sure to also begin researching how to pay for college. There are four basic types of aid:

  1. Federal Aid (need-based grants, scholarships and loans)
  2. State Aid (need-based grants and scholarships)
  3. College/University Aid (need, merit, and/or talent- based scholarships and grants, loans)
  4. Corporate/Not-for-profit Aid (scholarships offered through corporations or not-for profit organizations such as USAA or Rotary Club award.

In cases of need-based aid, the process begins with the filing of appropriate financial aid forms.

  1. File the FAFSA. This is typically done after you have completed your Federal Tax Return, ideally by February 15 but no later than April 15th. The FAFSA results determine if you qualify for Federal and/or State funds.
  2. File the CSS profile, if required, along with any additional required institutional forms.
  3. Submit individual applications for Corporate/Not-for-profit scholarships on an as-needed basis. These scholarships are listed on our website. Check with your employer to see if they offer scholarships to children of employees and research other scholarship opportunities in the counseling office.

College/University merit and talent based awards may have earlier deadlines, may or may not require additional forms, and at times can require an interview, audition or scholarship competition. Please research your schools’ financial aid and scholarship policies carefully.

For many the scholarship process is an easy ride but some people fall victim to scholarship scams. Read more about Avoiding Scholarship Scams here.
